Foundation Shares Stats with Ag Producers
You may have seen Mobridge Regional Hospital & Clinics' eye-opening annual stats in a recent newsletter. If not, here are some of our favorites from the last year:
- Our four rural health clinics saw an average of 75 patients a day.
- We handled 4,487 emergency department visits, including 86 life-threatening trauma cases.
- Our EMS crew made 811 ambulance runs.
- We delivered 60 babies, completed 295 surgeries, performed 1,241 EKGs, did 8,967 imaging studies, and ran 47,927 lab tests.
- Our physical and occupational therapists provided 6,000 patient sessions and our cardiopulmonary rehab completed 701 patient visits.
- Our new mental and behavioral telehealth program conducted 310 counseling sessions in its first 8 months.
As Foundation staff and board members prepared for an informational lunch at Mobridge Livestock Market earlier this month, we realized we have our own set of exciting stats to share about the last year--our first year of the Healthy Futures Capital Campaign.
- We presented MRH&C with a $500,000 check from our generous donors this spring.
- Our overall goal is to raise $1.5 million over three years for the project.
- We are less than $50,000 away from being able to present another $500,000!
Why are we doing all this? Because we know the building project is critical to MRH&C’s ongoing success, and by extension, the future health of the communities we serve.
- It will allow us to keep up with the rising regional demand for healthcare services.
- We’ll be able to replace obsolete 65-year-old infrastructure.
- Rural and frontier patients will see an increase in satisfaction with an improved layout and increased scope of services offered locally.
- MRH&C will remain competitive in serving patients and recruiting excellent medical staff.
Despite the long-term benefits, in the short term, construction has taken longer and is costing MRH&C more money than originally anticipated.
- In our fiscal year 2023, MRH&C experienced a net loss of just over $1 million. A smaller loss is estimated for 2024.
Once the building project is completed, income and expenses are expected to even out again and the added benefit to local communities will be much more tangible. In the meantime, we’re sharing some additional information about how revenues and expenses work at MRH&C and why all of us at MRHC Foundation are so excited when residents call us to express their support of our vision and desire to donate to the Healthy Futures Capital Campaign.

Stats FAQs
Do you accept other in-kind donations besides cattle?
Yes, we do! We have had donors contribute everything from free advertising (thanks Dakota Radio Group and Mobridge Tribune) to highly appreciated stocks and mutual funds to chattels and real estate. We work with local donors and their accountants to figure out the most tax advantaged ways to give.
Why does MRH&C receive just 52¢ for every dollar it bills for services rendered?
If you guessed it is because of negotiated rates with government payers (Medicare, Medicaid, etc.) and private insurance companies (i.e. BCBS, Avera, Sanford, etc.), you were right! Many insurance companies use cost-based reimbursement rather than paying the fee we set for each service.
What do you mean by ‘Admin’ expenses?
When we say that 10% of our expenses in 2023 were administrative, we are totaling insurance costs, software licensing fees, equipment leases, interest, and other administrative/operating expenses outside of payroll and benefits.
