July Building & Expansion Project Update

Posted 8/12/24 (Mon)

Construction clipped along through July as teams work through Phase 2 of the project. We expect the operating room, kitchen and infusion center will all be open and in use by the end of the year. Phase 3 will start as soon as Phase 2 ends, and both Phase 3 and 4 are scheduled to wrap up in 2025.

If you drive by today, you can see the framing for our new emergency department entrance and the framing and sheathing for the new infusion center. With the walls up, we are getting ready to pour the cement slab and enclose all of it. Once that’s done, the interior work goes a lot faster.

In our old obstetrics department, interior walls were demolished to make way for renovations. If you previously purchased little footprints for the wall in honor of children born at MRH&C, have no fear! We carefully removed those before the demolition and are excited to find a home for them in the new OB department.

Some of the original concrete slab that the old obstetrics unit was built on was also demolished in July. This was necessary so that the slab for the new operating room can be poured as one piece to avoid any settling or cracking in the future. It wouldn’t do to have a crack in the floor of the OR, where sterilization is key and cracks pose an infection control risk.

Behind the scenes, the cement slab has been poured for the new kitchen and the walls have gone up. Our new OR area is now fully enclosed, and the slab is being poured. The new ambulance garage on the west side is being finished too, but it won’t be put into service until our ER Department is moved to its new home at the end of Phase 3. For now, we’ll use it to house some construction equipment and materials for our next phase of construction.
