Chief Nursing Officer
Reports Directly to the Chief Executive Officer
Directly Supervises: Nurse manager, Surgery Director, EMS Manager, Visiting Nurse Manager, Cardio Pulmonary Director, and Respiratory Therapy.
Position Purpose
The Director of Nursing is responsible for overseeing and assisting all staff employed in their areas of responsibility in a professional manner.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

- Demonstrates responsibility and authority for quality of nursing and EMS care within the organization
- Works effectively with staff, administration and providers.
- A positive role model for staff, demonstrating professionalism in both conduct and appearance.
- Treats others with respect dignity and compassion.
- Follows through with projects, issues, and concerns in a timely manner.
- Acts as a resource for others within the organization.
- Maintains a positive working relationship with other hospital departments and medical staff.
- Ensures that nursing personnel are cognizant of the rights of patients and serves as an advocate of those rights.
- Provides time for consultation with staff.
- Motivates and supports others to grow in their knowledge base.
- Provides counseling and disciplinary measures of staff using appropriate standards and guidelines.
- Consults with CEO for problem solving and informs same of significant concerns within their departments.
- Actively participates in leadership development activities. Also volunteers at and supports hospital sponsored activities.
- Conducts monthly staff meetings to ensure effective communication & understanding throughout areas of responsibility.
- Integrates within the organization by participating in appropriate committees.
- Provides direction to nursing personnel in organizing the prioritizing of clinical experience.
- Continually strives to improve quality by actively maintaining meaningful QA programs within each area of responsibility.
- Acts as a resource for others within the organization.
- Maintains a positive “Can do” attitude in all tasks.

- Ensures adequate staffing coverage for patient care in all areas of responsibility
- Follows departmental policies and pertinent standards of care.

- Complies with the policies and procedures of MRH & Clinics.
- Develop and maintain a monthly, quarterly, and annual departmental quality report.
- Promote an environment in which all staff work cooperatively toward achieving departmental and organizational goals and objectives.
- Acts as a liaison between all areas of responsibility and other department leadership, medical staff, and administration on a variety of issues.
- Communicates effectively in verbal and written modes.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
- Maintain computer proficiency including Electronic Medical Records system.
- Prepare routine/ad hoc reports as indicated
Minimum Qualifications - Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, a Master’s Degree is preferred but not required.
Experience:
- Five (5) years of previous experience is preferred, including work in a variety of settings.
- Proficient use of an Electronic Medical Records System is preferred.
Certification /Licenses: Current RN Licensure is required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
The Chief Nursing Officer must have strong interpersonal, leadership, team building, analytical, research, planning, project management, presentation preparation and delivery, and decision-making capabilities to insure effective and efficient operation of the Nursing Department. Qualified candidate must have the ability to set priorities, as well as identify and resolve problems effectively and efficiently. Excellent communication and organizational skills for optimizing workflow leading to exceptional patient care is necessary for success in this position. The CNO must be able to delegate tasks to supervisory staff effectively. The successful candidate should have the ability to communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team as well as have the capacity to coordinate and improve customer satisfaction among patients, staff, providers and other internal customers. As positive role model for all staff, the CNO should be professional at all times within the organization. It is imperative that the CNO pursue activities to support the strategic priorities of the organization as well as actively participate in the community as an advocate and representative of the organization.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Manual Dexterity: Work requires moderate speed, accuracy and the ability to use electronic medical record along with various clinical information systems and computer programs.
Physical Effort: Work requires considerable variety of fairly steady active physical exertion with some and/or continuous standing or walking.
Working Conditions: Subject to inside environmental conditions.
Risks exposure to communicable or infectious disease.
Hazards: Exposure to hazards that may result in short-term work-related absences. Exposure to blood borne pathogens and hazardous material.
